Weiss & Moy, P.C.

Firm Background

Weiss & Moy, P.C. was established in Scottsdale, Arizona in 1976. We also have offices in Las Vegas, Nevada and Washington, D.C. Weiss & Moy, P.C. is a full-service intellectual property law firm that provides a comprehensive offering of IP services, including prosecution, registration, entity formation, advising and litigation services relating to patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets and corporate matters.

Weiss & Moy, P.C. attorneys bring with them a diversity of experience in large firm and major corporate settings. Harry Weiss, the firm's founder, is a former managing patent attorney for IBM and a patent counsel for Motorola with responsibility for the Phoenix area. He knows, from the inside, the level of service that clients of this level of sophistication expect from their counsel. Jeff Moy and Mitch Harris, two of the firm's electrical engineers, have also both worked for major electronics companies, and have benefited immeasurably from this experience.

Several of the firm's senior IP professionals have large firm backgrounds. They have tried to replicate in the less structured and more efficient environment of a boutique, the commitment to excellence that characterizes the firms where they received much of their training.

In addition to the experience of our attorneys, the location of our Washington, D.C. office, in close proximity to the Patent and Trademark Office, has made it especially convenient, and cost-effective for the firm to interview with U.S. Patent Office Examiners on an in-person basis. Interviews of this type have been, in our experience, extremely productive.

At Weiss & Moy, P.C., we believe that the value our firm can deliver in the IP area is a direct function of our firm's size and the nature of the experience of our professionals. Because Weiss & Moy, P.C. is a boutique, there is typically a very direct working relationship between the firm's senior attorneys and the clients. Since our firm is not highly-leveraged, it is rarely the situation that multiple lawyers will be assigned to a single matter (other than in litigation), with the result that duplication of attorney effort and miscommunication between attorney and client is avoided. In our experience, this translates into a more efficient and more satisfying relationship for attorney and client alike.

It may be helpful for us to provide a brief explanation of our firm's philosophy with respect to the different intellectual property services that Weiss & Moy, P.C. provides. With respect to IP protection, we believe that the client is best served by a strategy that seeks to sufficiently protect IP that has value to the client, either because of the client's present or anticipated commercial activities or because of a licensing opportunity. Intellectual property that does not fall into this category should generally not be protected. In terms of the level of protection sought, it should be reasonable and tailored to the client's needs. Overprotection (e.g., unnecessary non-U.S. filings) and underprotection are to be avoided. At Weiss & Moy, P.C., we will work with the client to determine the appropriate venue or venues for filing, the type of filing that is appropriate, and so forth.
